Here is something to ask yourself: Is my website mobile friendly? If not, Google may punish you in their search results.
On April 21st, a new algorithm launched by Google has been implemented to favor websites that are optimized for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets). This phenomenon nicknamed “Mobilegeddon” is now being addressed to make sure that mobile-friendly websites get top priority in search engine results over ones that are not mobile optimized. In short, websites that are not mobile friendly will suffer from lower search rankings.
Before, the Google algorithms just required that websites were ONLY mobile optimized for better viewability on mobile devices. Now, factors like responsive design, functional readability and using software embedded that is not mobile friendly (e.g. Adobe Flash) will affect a website’s search engine rank.
Here how this change to Google’s SEO implementations will affect your business on the web.
With the increase in views of web content on mobile devices, Google wants to make it a simple process to find and view relevant, mobile-optimized websites. Therefore, Google will now use “mobile-friendliness” to rank and display search results.
To see if your website is mobile friendly, take the following points into consideration:
Check out Google’s Webmaster’s Mobile Guide. Here you can find out about various ways to make your website mobile friendly and implement the necessary changes.
Use the Google Mobile-Friendly Test to see the optimization of your website for mobile display (you can test a page or multiple pages to see how the Googlebot views pages in search results)
Use Google’s Webmaster Tools to generate a report (also known as Mobile Usability Report) which can spot issues with your website on a mobile device (you will need a Google account to sign in and generate the report).
